On this date in 1863, famed actress Charlotte Cushman visited President Lincoln at the White House. Cushman was known for her brilliant portrayal of Shakespearean characters such as Lady Macbeth, Juliet, and Hamlet.
Charlotte Cushman was an open lesbian and romantically linked with journalist Matilda Hays. The two women lived as a couple in Rome for ten years, in an American expatriate community made up of prominent lesbian artists and sculptors.
