Jacob Parrott

Jacob Parrott was the first recipient of the Medal of Honor, 151 years ago today. Parrott was one of 22 men who infiltrated Confederate lines and hijacked a locomotive before being captured and imprisoned.Parrott was severely beaten 110 times in an attempt to make him talk. He was later exchanged and taken to Washington DC, where he met President Lincoln and was presented with the Medal of Honor by Secretary of War Stanton. Parrott served with the Union Army for the rest of the war.
