I’m continually fascinated at the unending number of artifacts which flow out of Central America and into auction houses in the United States. The vast majority of these works are taken by farmers from their fields which surround an ancient city or by looters who have cut their way into a building (or pyramid) and taken what was available. As an artifact collector, I cannot condone the looting of artifacts – but then again, I have traveled throughout Mexico for years and have seen the living conditions in of some of the remote area of the country. Selling ancient artifacts are a means to making a small living.
